Tesla analyst nearly crashes while testing FSD

Asia Tech Wire (July 30) -- A Tesla analyst nearly crashed while testing the electric automaker's Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature, according to Bloomberg.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said on two recent earnings calls that investors won't understand the company unless they use the driver-assistance system.

Truist Securities analyst William Stein cited this as a reason for test-driving one of Tesla's cars and nearly getting into a crash.

The report cited Stein's note issued Monday that while passing through an intersection, the Model Y he was riding in accelerated before the car in front of him could complete a right turn.

In this case, Stein said that his quick intervention was absolutely necessary or else an accident would have surely occurred.

Stein tested the Tesla FSD in April and again this month in the suburbs of New York City.

He said the latest test showed that the system adapted to road closures, potholes and traffic, and that the overall driving was more natural than in the April test.

Stein said the FSD's performance in the latest test was a pleasant surprise, but that it was still far from solving problems with autonomous driving.

The analyst has a "hold" rating on Tesla and a $215 price target.
