TikTok fined $2.42 million by UK regulator

Asia Tech Wire (July 25) -- The Office of Communications (Ofcom), the UK's communications regulator, announced Wednesday that it had fined TikTok 1.875 million pounds ($2.42 million).

The agency said in a statement that TikTok failed to provide it with accurate information about the social media platform's parental controls feature "Family Pairing" after receiving a formal request for data.

Ofcom said TikTok first submitted inaccurate data and then failed to communicate the error or correct the problem in a timely manner, a delay that affected the agency's progress in issuing a transparency report on child safety.

A TikTok spokesperson responded by saying, "We inadvertently provided inaccurate information to Ofcom regarding the use of Family Pairing in the UK."

"While we subsequently provided the correct information, we fell short of our obligations by not reporting the error sooner, and apologisz for any disruption this caused," the spokesperson added.

TikTok promises to fully cooperate with all Ofcom requests and has already improved its internal processes.
