Aug.23,2024

Asia Tech Wire (Aug 23) -- Nepal's Cabinet approved lifting the ban on social media platform TikTok at a meeting on Thursday

Prithvi Subba Gurung, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, said at the meeting that the directive to lift the ban requires TikTok to comply with the guidelines set by the government for social media operations and fulfill four other conditions.

The four conditions are promoting Nepali tourism, investing in improving digital safety literacy and literacy of Nepali public, improving the quality of public education and enhancing sensitivity to the language of social media.

In November 2023, Rekha Sharma, the then Minister of Communication and Information Technology, banned TikTok in Nepal for provoking social harmony.

Gurung said that Nepal does not allow all social media apps, including TikTok, to spread any inflammatory messages that affect social harmony.

He noted that the above guidelines are equally binding on all social media platforms.
