Brazilian judge ends investigations into Google and Telegram

Asia Tech Wire (June 21) -- Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes decided on Thursday to end investigations into Alphabet's Google and Telegram.

In his ruling, he agreed with Brazil's deputy attorney general that there was no reason to require criminal proceedings against the two tech companies.

Last May, Moraes ordered investigations into executives at Telegram and Google.

This came after Google and Telegram objected to a proposed internet regulation bill on their platforms, but they later removed posts as ordered by the Supreme Court.

The bill would put the onus on Internet companies, search engines and social messaging services to detect and report illegal material, rather than leaving it to the courts, and charge hefty fines to companies that fail to do so.
