U.S. DOJ may force Google to divest Android

Asia Tech Wire (Aug 12) -- After winning an antitrust lawsuit against Google, the U.S. Department of Justice will not only weaken the company's alliance with Apple, but may also seek to get the company to implement major changes, such as forcing a divestiture of Android, according to The Information.

In the next phase of penalizing Google for its illegal monopoly practices, the U.S. government could crack down on the company's efforts in the next-generation conversational AI search sector that it dominates and facilitate allowing competitors to eat into its 95% market share, lawyers claimed.

Gene Burroughs, a former assistant general counsel at Microsoft, said Justice Department lawyers will almost certainly ask the judge for structural remedies, such as forcing Google to divest itself of Android, rather than just behavioral restrictions on the way Google operates its search business and collaborates with companies like Apple.
