Google drops Fitbit smartwatch project

Asia Tech Wire (Sep 4) -- Google has officially abandoned the Fitbit smartwatch project, and has shifted its focus to the Pixel Watch line.

Google product manager Sandeep Waraich revealed the shift in an interview with Engadget.

Fitbit was once known for its fitness trackers, but its smartwatch business has been facing setbacks.

Despite launching series such as the Versa and Sense, subsequent versions have been criticized for feature cuts and poor experiences.

In particular, the release of the Versa 4 and Sense 2, which almost completely eschewed features expected of a smartwatch, such as WiFi connectivity and third-party app support, has been accused of making way for Pixel Watch products.
