Huawei has won a trademark battle with French luxury goods company Chanel after a European high court said there was no similarity between the two companies' logos.
Chinese telecoms giant Huawei applied for registration protection for its computer hardware trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in 2017. The trademark depicts two intertwined half-rings at the top and bottom.
Chanel objected to it, claiming that the design of the logo was similar to that of its trademark registered in France, featureing two half-rings intertwined horizontally.
The EUIPO rejected Chanel's objection in 2019, stating that the two trademark designs were not similar and unlikely to cause confusion among the public.
Chanel then appealed and was dismissed before the EU General Court in Luxembourg. The ruling stated that the visual differences between the two trademarks were significant.
