Asia Tech Wire (Mar 1) -- European automaker Stellantis N.V. will assemble Citroen electric cars in Indonesia from July this year, said Rachmat Kaimuddin, Indonesia's deputy coordinating minister of maritime affairs and investments in infrastructure and transportation, on Friday.

However, he did not provide details on the potential scale of production or the value of the investment.

Consumers can now buy Citroen vehicles, including the electric model e-C3, in the Indonesian market, as Citroen imports cars from India to sell in Indonesia under the Completely Built Up (CBU) scheme.

The local assembly plan means that the French automobile brand will ship cars in parts or completely knocked down (CKD). And Citroen will then work with a local factory to assemble the parts into an actual car.

For his part, Iwan Suryana, deputy minister in charge of investment climate development at Indonesia's investment ministry, said that Stellantis would assemble cars at its existing factory in the Purwakarta area, West Java.

Kaimuddin noted that the Indonesian government would then push Stellantis to build a new factory, but did not give a timetable.
