X sued in Ireland for using user data to train AI chatbot Grok

Asia Tech Wire (Aug 8) -- Elon Musk-owned social media company X (formerly Twitter) is facing a lawsuit in Ireland for using user data to train its AI chatbot Grok.

X has been taken to court in Ireland over the use of European user data to train artificial intelligence models, an incident related to X's processing of user data to train Grok last month without notifying or asking for consent, Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) reported on Tuesday.

The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires a valid legal basis for any processing of personal data, and breaches of the regulation can result in fines of up to 4% of annual global turnover.

According to RTÉ, Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) suing X under the Data Protection Act 2018.

The DPC is seeking orders that include suspending, restricting or prohibiting X from processing users' personal data for the purpose of developing, training or improving any machine learning, large-scale language or other artificial intelligence system.
