Asian Tech Press -- American automaker Ford Motor Co (F: NYSE), may soon discontinue its operations in India, shuting down its two plants in the country, according to The Economic Times.

Ford may be in talks with several car companies about contract manufacturing or sales of its Indian plants. Indian ridesharing company Ola Cabs is reportedly the latest one that the US-based carmaker is talking with, and could use Ford's factories to build electric cars.

Ola refused to comment, and Ford India called it a speculation and said he would not comment on the speculation.

After ending its partnership with Mahindra & Mahindra earlier this year, Ford began to find a new partner in India. The candidates include MG, Changan Automobile and Great Wall Motors. Changan Automobile and Great Wall Motor, while showing initial interest, are currently abandoning their plans in India due to geopolitical tensions along the India-China border.

The two factories, one in Chennai and another in Sanand, Gujarat, are used to produce cars and engines by Ford. However, Ford is considering shutting down operations at the two plants due to a sharp decline in the passenger car market.
