Asia Tech Wire (May 28) -- India's Adani Group is in talks to enter the e-commerce and payments sector, according to the Financial Times.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the report said the company is currently weighing an application for a license to operate on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a public digital payments network in India.

The group is also in talks with banks to finalize its previously announced Adani co-branded credit card program.

In addition, Adani Group is negotiating to offer online shopping services through India's public e-commerce platform, Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).

PhonePe, a payment app company backed by Google and Walmart, is already operating a payment app based on the UPI network. While domestic Indian groups like Paytm and Tata offer grocery and fashion shopping services through ONDC.

If finalized, Adani will offer these services through its consumer app Adani One. Launched in late 2022, the app offers travel services such as flight and hotel bookings.
