Asian Tech Press (Nov 22) -- China's Twitter-like platform Weibo Corp., formally announced on Monday that it has acquired Chinese retailer Suning.com's seat in the LPL, renaming the LPL team "SUNING (SN)" to "Weibo Gaming (WBG)".
Previously, there were many rumors that Weibo was interested in buying a LPL seat. As Chinese esports team Edward Gaming (EDG) won the 2021 League of Legends World Championship finals, it has set off a wave of esports fever, accelerating the development of the esports industry, making it more and more promising.
The leading Chinese social giant certainly wanted to enter the esports industry, and SN decided to sell its seat to Weibo after several unsuccessful attempts to advance to the Worlds.
In this year's Summer Games, SN's performance was less than satisfactory, which is why Suning chose to give up SN lpl seat.
Some analysts say that the addition of Weibo has injected money into the original SN. But with the current lineup, it is almost impossible if Weibo is trying to fight for a spot at the Worlds.
