Vivo signs 5G patent deal with Nokia, ending legal fights globally

Asia Tech Wire (Feb 5) -- Chinese smartphone maker vivo and Finnish telecom giant Nokia Corp. announced on Monday that they have signed a multi-year 5G patent deal, ending their legal fights globally.

The global patent cross-license agreement between vivo and Nokia, covers both parties' standard-essential patents in 5G and other cellular communications technologies.

Notably, the signing of the agreement will end all pending patent litigation between the two parties in all jurisdictions.

As of December 31, 2023, vivo had filed 25,000 patent applications in more than 70 countries and regions around the world, including 6,000+ patents for 5G communications standards.

And Nokia's patent portfolio consists of approximately 20,000 patent families, including over 6,000 essential 5G patents.

This is Nokia's sixth major smartphone licence agreement in the last 13 months. The company has previously entered into similar cross-license agreements with Apple, Samsung, OPPO, Honor and Huawei.
