Taiwan's PSMC to partner with Japanese firm to mass-produce MRAM chips
Feb.5,2024

Asia Tech Wire (Feb 5) -- Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC) will cooperate with a Japanese company to mass-produce MRAM chips, according to Nikkei.

PSMC plans to mass-produce magnetoresistive random-access memory (MRAM), and will cooperate in the first half of the year with Power Spin Inc., a company founded by Japan's Tohoku University that researches semiconductor technology.

According to the report, PSMC will accept the technology from Power Spin and promote research and trial production with the aim of starting mass production in 2029.

MRAM will hopefully be usable in data centres for generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the future. According to Tetsuro Endo, a professor at Tohoku University in Japan who serves as Power Spin's chief technology officer, the MRAM market has reached 30 billion yen in 2022.
