Samsung announces settlement, but Indian union says strike will continue

Asia Tech Wire (Oct 8) -- Despite Samsung announcing a settlement, an Indian labor union said the strike at its Chennai plant will continue.

After nearly a month of protests, some of the workers on strike at Samsung's Chennai plant have decided to return to work.

The Tamil Nadu government took the lead in organizing talks between Samsung India workers and management on Monday, which lasted about seven hours.

The employees and Samsung India Electronics Private Limited signed an agreement that outlines the employment welfare measures that the company has agreed to implement.

However, it is not certain how many employees stopped the strike. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), a trade union organization, said after the meeting that the strike will continue.

Samsung workers and their representatives want Samsung and the government to recognize the Samsung India Workers' Union (SIWU), a CITU-backed union, in addition to protesting wages and working conditions.

And this time, apart from refusing to recognize the SIWU, Samsung did not elaborate on how it would implement a pay hike.

The CITU has said that if Samsung fails to meet the two key demands, the strike will continue.
