Asia Tech Wire (July 29) -- U.S. tech giant Qualcomm has filed a lawsuit against Chinese smartphone maker Transsion (688036.SH) in Europe's Unified Patent Court (UPC).

In its latest lawsuit, Qualcomm accuses Transsion of infringing on patents involving chips and geotagging-based search technology.

Qualcomm not only named Transsion as a defendant, but also included several of its European subsidiaries and distributors in the lawsuit, including Tecno Mobile, one of Transsion's most successful brands, as well as German distributor Tekpoint, Dutch smartphone seller Max ICT, and German e-commerce platform Galaxus Deutschland.

The lawsuit comes on the heels of a patent lawsuit filed by Qualcomm against Transsion in India's Delhi High Court.

Qualcomm claimed in the Indian lawsuit that Transsion infringed four of its non-standard essential patents.

Transsion is the smartphone market leader in several emerging economies, accounting for 48% of smartphone sales in Africa. At the end of 2023, it overtook OPPO to become the world's fourth largest smartphone maker.
