OpenAI's launch of Sora may just be clever marketing ploy, says Chinese expert

Asia Tech Wire (Mar 1) -- OpenAI's launch of Sora may just be a clever marketing ploy, as a Chinese expert said the limitations of AI prevent it from replacing the human brain.

Zhao Ai, executive vice president and secretary-general of the China Society of Economic Reform (CSER), said in a recent interview with Xinhua Finance that Sora will prompt AI to further lead a new round of industry changes, which may bring a considerable impact on film, television, video, advertising and other sectors.

But AI has its own limitations, which make it impossible to replace the human brain, Zhao added.

He pointed out that like movie production, both in scale and technology, it is still harder to maintain continuity of characters and scenes in such videos generated using text prompts and conditional parameters.

And according to a Wall Street report in February, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wants to raise up to $7 trillion to build a global AI chip empire. It's worth noting that Altman's $7 trillion chip-making dream is far beyond the current size of the global semiconductor industry.

Zhao concluded that in the absence of chips and lack of investment, the timely launch of Sora to promote financing may after all be acceptable as a smart marketing strategy.
