Asia Tech Wire (Sep 26) -- OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the departures of several of the company's tech leaders on social media platform X on Wednesday afternoon.

Hours after OpenAI CTO Mira Murati resigned, two other tech leads, Barret Zoph and Bob McGrew, also resigned.

According to their LinkedIn profiles, Zoph's title was vice president of research, while McGrew's title was chief research officer.

Altman also said Matt Knight will become chief information security officer, Josh Achiam will become head of mission alignment, and Mark Chen will become senior vice president of research.

Amid a string of executive departures, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI is discussing having Altman take a 7% stake in the company and reorganizing it as a for-profit enterprise.

The major shift would mark the first time Altman has gained ownership in the artificial intelligence startup.

In response, an OpenAI spokesperson said that OpenAI remains "focused on building AI that benefits everyone," adding that "the nonprofit is core to our mission and will continue to exist."
