Asia Tech Wire (Nov 7) -- OpenAI has announced that it has successfully acquired the domain name chat.com and redirected it to its artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted the URL on X on Wednesday, which opens to automatically redirect to the official ChatGPT website.
Estimated to be in the range of $15-$20 million, the acquisition further enriches OpenAI's high-end domain name assets in the web space.
Since its registration in 1996, chat.com has become one of the more recognizable and established domain names on the Internet.
In early 2023, HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah purchased the chat.com domain name for over $10 million.
However, just a few months later, Shah announced that he was selling the domain, but did not disclose details of the deal or information about the buyer.
NameBio, a database of domain name transactions, shows that the owner of chat.com sold it on March 28, 2023 for $15.5 million.
