Asia Tech Wire (Oct 30) -- OpenAI has plans to join forces with Broadcom and TSMC to build its first chip, according to Reuters.
Tuesday's report, citing people familiar with the matter, said OpenAI is working with Broadcom and TSMC to build its first in-house chip to power its artificial intelligence systems, while adding AMD chips alongside Nvidia chips to meet its surging infrastructure needs.
The people revealed that OpenAI has looked at a range of options to diversify its chip supply and reduce costs.
OpenAI has considered in-house manufacturing, the report noted, as well as raising money for a costly program to build a network of chip-making facilities known as "foundries".
Due to the cost and time required to build a network, the company has abandoned its ambitious foundry program for now, and instead plans to focus on in-house chip design work.
