Asia Tech Wire (July 16) -- Apollo Go, the robotaxi service platform of Chinese tech giant Baidu, has denied suspending operations in Wuhan.
A screenshot of a chat transcript circulating on the Internet late Monday showed that "under pressure, Apollo Go suspended operations in Wuhan in the afternoon."
In response, an Apollo Go customer service representative said on Tuesday that Apollo Go had not discontinued its operation, and reminded users to pay attention to information on the official website if there were any operational changes.
A person from the local traffic management department also said, "Do not have information related to the suspension of Apollo Go."
"News has been rather mixed lately, seeing is believing, so don't listen to this information," the person added.
The rumor comes as Apollo Go's robotaxi service has sparked widespread attention in Wuhan recently.
The singularity of commercializing Baidu's Robotaxi service appears to be approaching as costs fall, fleet sizes expand, and initiatives such as the elimination of on-board safety officers are implemented.
However, Apollo Go has also faced many skeptical voices, and has even sparked a boycott from traditional cab drivers who fear their livelihoods will be devastated.
