Turkey to impose 40% extra tariff on Chinese cars
Jun.11,2024

Asia Tech Wire (June 11) -- Turkey will impose 40% additional tariffs on vehicles imported from China.

Turkey's trade ministry announced on Saturday its decision to impose a 40% additional tariff on conventional and hybrid vehicles imported from China, with a minimum additional tariff of $7,000 per car.

Its statement said the decision would take effect from July 7th.

The trade ministry said the government's aim was to protect domestic automakers while also taking into account Turkey's current account deficit.

Notably, this is not the first time Turkey has imposed tariffs on Chinese cars.

In March 2023, Turkey imposed tariffs on electric cars imported from China, making them as high as 50%.

In addition, according to a previous order from Turkey's trade ministry, all companies importing electric cars must set up at least 140 authorized service stations within Turkey and exclusive call centers for each brand.

And according to relevant statistics, nearly 80% of Turkey's automobile imports from China belong to internal combustion engine vehicles.
