Asian Tech Press (Sep 9) -- Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) gaming console has sold more than 1 million units in Japan, Japanese media Famitsu reported Thursday.
The report said PS5, which was released by Sony Interactive Entertainment on Nov. 12, 2020, has sold an estimated 1 million units in total in Japan.
According to data covering 43 sales weeks from November 12, 2020 to September 5, 2021, cumulative sales of Sony's PS5 in Japan were 1,012,656 units. Of these, there were 847,421 units sold for the standard edition and 165,235 units for the digital edition.
In addition, Resident Evil Village, a survival game developed by Japanese game company Capcom Co., Ltd. and released on May 8, 2021, was the best-selling software package for PS5, selling 67,000 units.
The report noted that since the gaming console has been difficult to obtain, it has been sold in a lottery since launch. With the release of popular games such as Final Fantasy XVI, which was developed by Japan's Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd., but with a release date to be determined, the supply and sales of Sony's PS5 are expected to increase in the future.
