Asia Tech Wire (July 19) -- Taiwan-based fabless semiconductor company MediaTek Inc. said a lawsuit filed by Huawei has no significant impact on it.

MediaTek issued an announcement Friday clarifying media reports.

In response to the news that Huawei has filed a patent lawsuit against MediaTek that may involve mobile communications technology, MediaTek said the lawsuit has no significant impact on the company.

"The case has entered the judicial process and the company has no comment," it said.

The news comes on the heels of reports that Huawei has recently filed a patent infringement lawsuit against MediaTek in a Chinese court.

Some Chinese intellectual property industry experts speculated that the patents that Huawei is suing MediaTek for are likely to involve cellular mobile communication technologies such as 5G (or including 4G, 3G, etc.).

Industry analysis indicated that this would be a brand new attempt by Huawei to collect patent license fees from smart terminal manufacturers, and further explore the possibility of collecting license fees from chip makers under the existing patent licensing model in the global smartphone and other industries.
