Asian Tech Press (Nov 10) -- Cruise LLC, General Motors Co. (GM)'s self-driving unit, announced a round of layoffs on Thursday.
The layoffs will affect contract workers aacross its driverless ride-hailing service, who were responsible for cleaning, charging and maintaining Cruise's fleet.
Cruise did not disclose the exact number of layoffs, but said the layoffs reflect the current state of its ride-hailing business.
A spokesperson for the company said in a statement, "Cruise has made the difficult decision to reduce a portion of the contingent workforce that supported driverless ridehail operations."
Cruise, however, said it plans to resume its driverless operations, but gave no specific timeline.
Earlier, Cruise announced it was suspending the business and recalling 950 driverless cars across the U.S. for a software update.
