Asia Tech Wire (June 28) -- Chinese electric car maker Geely (0175.HK) on Thursday unveiled its latest generation of "blade-type" lithium iron phosphate batteries, the Shield Short Blade battery, or Shendun.

Geely said that compared with existing products on the market, Shendun has significant advantages in terms of safety performance, cycle life, fast-charging capability and low-temperature discharge.

The battery has an energy density of 192Wh/kg, a cycle life of 3,500 turns that allows for a safe driving range of more than 1 million kilometers.

According to Geely, with a fast charging speed of 1.5 times that of traditional long blade batteries, it only takes 17 minutes to charge Shendun from 10% to 80%.

In a CATARC test, Shendun's battery cell remained smoke-free, fire-free and non-explosive after being simultaneously punctured by eight steel needles with a diameter of 5mm and left to stand for an hour.

In addition, the battery cell has passed the 5.8mm gunshot penetration test for the first time in the world. A 5.8mm bullet penetrated the cell at a speed of 920m/s, causing a burst damage with a wound diameter of more than 60mm, but it still did not catch fire and did not explode.

Geely also revealed that the battery will feature first in the Geely Galaxy E5, a new pure electric SUV.

Previously, market sources said that the Galaxy E5 is due to go on sale in August, priced at 130,000 yuan to 170,000 yuan.
