Amazon files new legal challenges in dispute with India's Future Group
Jan.10,2022

Asian Tech Press (Jan 10) -- Amazon.com Inc. filed a new legal action in its long-running dispute with Indian retailer Future Group after India's antitrust agency suspended an agreement between the two parties in 2019, leading to a stay of arbitration between them. Reuters cited four sources and reported.

Last month, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) suspended approval of a 2019 agreement between Amazon and Future Group, undercutting the U.S. e-commerce giant's efforts to block the sale of Future Group's retail assets to Indian market leader Reliance Industries.

The suspension stunned Amazon, and a court in New Delhi subsequently stayed in arbitration proceedings between the two sides.

On Saturday night, Amazon filed an appeal with India's National Company Law Appellate Tribunal against the CCI's stay, two sources said.

Two other sources said the arbitration proceedings between Future Group and Amazon must be held until Feb. 1 because a Delhi court judge said last week that the deal was suspended due to antitrust. In response, Amazon has also filed an appeal against the Delhi court's decision in the Supreme Court.

Amazon and CCI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
