Hartmut Neven, head of Google's quantum department, said on February 5 local time that Google plans to release commercial quantum computing applications within five years. The company just released the quantum chip Willow at the end of last year. Neven said in a statement: "We are optimistic that within five years we will see real-world applications that can only be achieved on quantum computers." The real-world applications mentioned by Google include areas related to energy, material science and new drug research and development, such as discovering alternative new energy sources, making more advanced batteries for electric vehicles, and discovering innovative drug targets. Nvidia founder and CEO Huang Renxun predicted at the beginning of this year that quantum technology is far from being widely used in five years. He expects that the practical application of quantum computers will take about 20 years.
