Asia Tech Wire (Aug 15) -- The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) said Wednesday that it fined T-Mobile $60 million earlier this year for failing to prevent or disclose unauthorized access to certain sensitive data.
T-Mobile signed a national security agreement with CFIUS in 2018 as part of its merger with Sprint.
This is the first time the agency has disclosed information about this fine, and in addition CFIUS has published a list of all the penalties it has imposed since 2018, without mentioning the names of the companies involved.
CFIUS said the $60 million fine against T-Mobile was the largest in its history.
For its part, T-Mobile said in a statement that technical issues a few years ago affected some requests for information from law enforcement agencies.
The company added that it reported the issue and no data breach occurred.
