U.S. House panel probes FCC's decision to deny $885.5 million in funding to Starlink

Asia Tech Wire (Oct 8) -- The U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Accountability said Monday that it is investigating the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) decision to deny $885.5 million in subsidies for rural broadband services to SpaceX's satellite Internet unit Starlink.

The FCC reiterated its position last December that the decision was made because Starlink failed to meet the basic requirements of the FCC's program, and that it could not prove that it could provide the service it promised after SpaceX challenged that decision for 2022.

Republican James Comer, chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, has asked the FCC to turn over documents on the decision by October 21st.

The committee wants to ensure that the FCC "followed established processes and is not improperly using the regulatory process for political purposes."

The FCC said it had received the letter and would respond.
