Asia Tech Wire (May 20) -- Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who was visiting Indonesia, officially announced the launch of Starlink internet service in the country on Sunday.
Musk said it will help millions of people in remote areas of Indonesia to access the Internet.
Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesia's coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment, said in a statement that Indonesia also hopes the Starlink service will improve education and health outcomes.
Asked if he plans to also invest in Indonesia's electric vehicle industry, Musk said he is focusing on the Starlink service first.
Musk revealed that it is likely that his other companies "will invest in Indonesia in the future," without giving details.
In addition to Tesla and SpaceX, the space exploration company that operates the Starlink internet service, Musk also runs social media platform X (formerly Twitter), brain-computer interface company Neuralink, artificial intelligence company xAI, and tunnel construction company The Boring Company.
