Asian Tech Press (Mar. 7) -- Chinese tech company ByteDance's TikTok has stopped livestreaming, new uploads in Russia amid the country's new "fake news" law.

Short video platform TikTok, the world's most popular non-gaming app, made the decision after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed Friday amendments to the criminal code of the Russian Federation.

The amendments, known as "fake news" law, sets out penalties for people who spread false information about Russian military operations.

"In light of Russia's new 'fake news' law, we have no choice but to suspend livestreaming and new content to our video service while we review the safety implications of this law,"TikTok announced in a series of tweets.

The company also added, "We will continue to evaluate the evolving circumstances in Russia to determine when we might fully resume our services with safety as our top priority."

For now, TikTok's in-app messaging service is not affected.
