Asia Tech Wire (July 29) -- Mitsubishi Motors will join an alliance formed by Honda Motor and Nissan Motor, in an effort to streamline production, according to Nikkei.

The three Japanese automakers intend to standardize the in-vehicle software that controls cars, the report said.

In addition, Nissan and Honda will likely jointly develop basic software and discuss its application to Mitsubishi vehicles.

Nissan, which owns a 34.01% stake in Mitsubishi Motors, and Honda said in March that they were considering a strategic partnership to collaborate on the production of electric vehicle parts and artificial intelligence in automotive software platforms.

Mitsubishi Motors is already part of a long-standing alliance between Nissan and France's Renault, with the three automakers agreeing last year to a restructuring for a smaller, but more pragmatic and flexible partnership.
