Asian Tech Press -- Kuaishou Technology (1024: Hong Kong) said on Wednesday it will shut down its overseas short video app Zynn in August, Reuters reported.

It was reported that Kuaishou told users in a notice that it will terminate services for Zynn on Aug. 20. The notice said the TikTok-like app, which launched in the North American market last year, will delete all user data after a 45-day grace period following the shutdown announcement.

The company confirmed the news in a statement, adding that its other overseas products will not be affected.

Publicly available information shows that Zynn formally launched on the North American market on May 9 last year. According to data provided by Sensor Tower, within a month of Zynn's debut, the app became the most downloaded iOS app in the U.S. by virtue of the incentive of giving money to users.

However, on June 9, 2021, news broke that Google App Store had dropped Zynn. In response, Kuaishou said that Zynn was taken down by Google because a video, which was privately taken from another platform by a user, received a complaint.

Then on June 16 last year, the Apple App Store also removed Zynn.

When Zynn returned to iOS and Android app stores on July 21 last year, it removed the incentive to pay for watching videos and replaced that with a system of "Zynncheers" points.

According to research firm Sensor Tower, Zynn was downloaded less than 500,000 times in the first half of the year, compared to TikTok's 455 million installs worldwide.
