Asian Tech Press (Apr. 22) -- Japanese carmaker Honda Motor Co (NYSE: HMC) plans to develop three new dedicated platforms for the production of millions of electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030.
Shinji Aoyama, Honda's global head of electrification, said on Thursday that the company will launch an electric mini commercial vehicle based on a new small EV platform in Japan in 2024.
It will be followed by full-size electric model on a new large platform, to be launched in North America in 2026.
Both platforms will also be used for other models.
Aoyama said a third "medium size" platform will be launched in 2027 and shared with General Motors (GM).
Honda and GM said in early April that they would jointly develop "affordable" EVs for the global market, but no other details were released.
Starting in 2024, GM will build two high-end electric SUVs for Honda in North America based on a dedicated electric vehicle platform for GM's Cadillac Lyriq.
On April 12, Honda announced that by 2030, the company will launch 30 all-electric vehicles in the global market, with plans to produce more than 2 million units annually.
Honda aims to produce 750,000-800,000 electric vehicles in North America by 2030, as well as in China, and another 400,000-500,000 in Japan and other markets, Aoyama said.
