Dubai launches pilot project for energy storage with Tesla Megapack

Asian Tech Press (Sep 28) -- The UAE's state-owned Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced last Sunday that it has launched a pilot project for energy storage using Tesla Inc's lithium-ion mega battery solution at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

According to the announcement, the project has a power capacity of 1.21 MW and energy capacity of 8.61 MWh, with an expected lifetime of up to 10 years. And the new Tesla Megapack will augment the existing energy storage facility.

The project will help Dubai meet the goal of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which is to have clean energy account for 75% of the city's total power generation capacity by 2050.

The solar theme park currently has a lectricity generation capacity of about 1,013 megawatts, which is expected to increase to 5 gigawatts (GW) at a later stage.
