China's Bilibili announces hiring more staff to quell overwork debate
Feb.9,2022

Asian Tech Press (Feb 9) -- Bilibili Inc (BILI:NASDAQ GS), one of China's largest video platforms, announced the hiring of more employees, after the sudden death of an employee has sparked heated debate about overwork.

A content reviewer at Bilibil died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage on Saturday after being asked to work overtime during Chinese New Year holidays. And the incident has sparked discussions about overwork on Chinese social media platforms in recent two days.

Bilibili officially responded to the sudden death of the employee on China's Twitter-like Weibo on Tuesday evening Beijing time.

It said that the employee who died suddenly, as the acting head of the graphic review team, could not stop working on content safety even during the Spring Festival holiday and needed to complete his work through shifts and on-call.

The company also said it had set up a special team that went to Wuhan on Tuesday, led by three vice presidents to condole with the deceased's family, and had communicated about the aftermath.

To avoid similar tragedies from happening again, the Shanghai-based Internet company announced it will expand its content audit staff by 1,000 this year to reduce per capita work pressure.
