Kevin Weil, chief product officer at OpenAI, said the Stargate project will provide the massive computing power needed to train more advanced AI models, reduce costs, and maintain the future development of AI in the United States. Stargate is a newly announced AI infrastructure program supported by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, with a target investment of $500 billion. Weil said the initial focus will be on building data centers to accommodate GPUs (graphics processing units) for training and running AI models. Weil was vague about whether OpenAI itself would eventually enter the chip manufacturing field, saying only: "We'll see." Although the cost of training and running advanced AI models is still high, Weil pointed out that computing costs have fallen by 99% in two years.
