Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving unit, said on Monday that it has received approval from California to expand its robotaxi business to more areas of the San Francisco Peninsula and further south, including San Jose. Waymo's California license comes as Tesla is preparing to launch a paid robotaxi service in Austin, Texas next month. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the electric car maker will expand the service to California later this year. The California Public Utilities Commission said in a statement that Waymo applied for authorization to expand its business in March and received 23 support responses and no protests from stakeholders. However, Waymo said it would not immediately expand its service in the San Francisco Bay Area.
