Asian Tech Press (Mar. 4) -- Britain has asked social media companies ByteDance's TikTok and Facebook's parent company Meta Platforms to ban Russian state-owned television network RT.

Bloomberg reported that the UK's culture minister Nadine Dorries made the request Thursday, a day after the European Union officially banned broadcasts, app downloads and sharing content on social media from RT as well as Russia's media outlet Sputnik within the bloc.

The EU measure effectively barred the broadcasts of the two major Russian media outlets. But RT content is still available on TikTok and Meta's Facebook and Instagram in the U.K.

Meta said Monday that it will restrict access to Russian media outlets RT and Sputnik on its platforms across the European Union.
