U.S. government considers merger of Intel's chip design business with AMD
Nov.5,2024

Asia Tech Wire (Nov 5) -- The U.S. government is considering letting Intel's chip design business merge with AMD, according to Semafor.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the report said that U.S. government officials are concerned about Intel's financial situation and have begun discussing the need to give Intel additional assistance beyond the billions of dollars in grants provided by the CHIPS Act.

One option is to merge Intel's chip design business with rivals such as AMD or Marvell, and accept the U.S. government's oversight and support.

However, analysts believe that even if Intel is willing to accept the proposal, AMD may not accept, and even if both sides agree, it is difficult to pass the EU and China's antitrust review.
