According to media reports, chip foundry TSMC plans to open a chip factory in Japan in 2023, which will be supplying image sensors for Sony, its biggest Japanese customer.

TSMC finalizes its decision to put its first chip factory in Japan into operation as early as 2023.

In late May this year, it was reported that the Japanese government wanted TSMC and Sony Group to invest 1 trillion yen ($9.2 billion) to build Japan's first 20nm chip factory. Under a proposal put forward by Japan's Ministry of Trade and Industry, the possible factory would be built near Sony's image sensor factory in southwestern Japan.

In mid-June, it was reported that TSMC was considering building its first chip factory in Japan, which would be close to a Sony plant in Japan.

In mid-July, TSMC confirmed that it is considering building its first chip factory in Japan and is currently in talks for this purpose and has launched due diligence. At the time, the company's chairman, Mark Liu, said that no final decision had been made regarding constructing a plant in Japan and that the final outcome would depend on customer demand.

TSMC, founded in 1987, is the world's largest foundry semiconductor manufacturer, and the company's customers include Apple, Qualcomm, Huawei, and others.
