TikTok nearing deal with Oracle to store U.S. user data locally

Asian Tech Press (Mar. 11) -- TikTok is nearing a deal with U.S. cloud computing giant Oracle Corp. to store U.S. user data without its Chinese parent company ByteDance having access to it.

Reuters reported exclusively on Thursday that TikTok's move has come in hopes of addressing U.S. regulators' concerns about the data integrity of the popular short-form video app.

It's unclear whether the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) will consider TikTok's partnership with Oracle to address the national security concerns it has identified, the sources said.

Under the new proposed partnership, Oracle would store all of TikTok's U.S. user data on its data servers.

The sources said that under the agreement, a dedicated U.S. data management team of hundreds of people will be created to act as gatekeepers of U.S. user information and isolate it from China-based ByteDance.

The two companies are discussing a structure under which the team would operate autonomously and not be controlled or overseen by TikTok, the sources added.
