The US still weighing approach to Huawei and TikTok
Apr.8,2021

The reviews are ongoing on how the US government will deal with Chinese tech companies Huawei and TikTok, according to The Hill.

Gina Raimondo, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, said Wednesday that the Biden administration is weighing how to solve the problems involving Chinese companies Huawei and TikTok during the daily White House press briefing.

Telecommunication giant Huawei and social media platform TikTok, whose parant company is ByteDance, suffered a number of sanctions imposed by the Trump administration. In 2019, Huawei was put on the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) Entity List, an official blacklist, banning U.S. companies’ cooperation with Huawei.

The ban on TikTok stalled in the final months of Trump administration. Even though the deadline of sale expired, the U.S. did not take any action, leaving the Biden administration to set its own rules on the matter.

While Raimondo did not directly commit to how the U.S. Commerce Department or the Biden administration would proceed on issues related to Huawei and TikTok, she said Sullivan, the U.S. national security advisor, is currently leading reviews on the two companies and other China-related topics.
