Asian Tech Press (Oct 29) -- The South Korean government said Friday that the national telecoms operator KT Corp's network services went down due to a human error.
South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT released the results of an investigation into KT outage, saying that a command word was missed during the replacement of equipment and a lack of internal security features triggered the massive nationwide outage, Yonhap News Agency reported Friday.
KT's wired and wireless internet services were disrupted for approximately 89 minutes from around 11:16am on Monday.
The investigation revealed that initially KT's Domain Name System (DNS) servers were overloaded with traffic causing a network failure. The staff then omitted the "exit" command during the replacement of the corporate router, resulting in the first setup error in the Busan area.
The impact of the subsequent network failure spread across the country, including Seoul, within 30 seconds, and was attributed to the fact that KT did not have internal security devices in place for data transmission errors. In addition, the replacement of the equipment in question was not properly managed.
