LG Chem to cover losses as GM recalls of all Chevrolet Bolt EVs due to fire risk
Aug.23,2021

General Motors has decided to recall all Bolt (including the new Bolt EUV) models.

GM says the batteries used in the Bolt may have two rare manufacturing defects, damaged battery anodes, and wrinkled battery diaphragms. These defects will increase fire risk in the batteries, and GM will replace the defective battery modules. The recall has cost GM an additional $1 million, which GM says battery supplier LG should cover.

GM's investigation revealed that specific battery cells produced at facilities other than LG's Ochang plant in South Korea, where the defective batteries were initially found, also had manufacturing defects. GM is currently working closely with LG to increase the production of replacement battery modules.

In addition, it is not the first time LG has been subject to a recall claim. In February, Hyundai announced a worldwide recall of more than 80,000 KONA and IONIQ electric vehicles due to 14 reports of battery fires since the KONA electric version of the car was launched in 2018.

After investigation, it was found that the vehicle fires were caused by a defect in some of the high-voltage battery system components that could have caused a short circuit, which could have triggered the vehicle fires. LG Chem, the battery provider for the vehicles, will cover 70 percent of the cost of the Hyundai recall.
