Asian Tech Press (Apr. 28) -- Chinese Internet giant Baidu Inc. got the first license to offer driverless ride-hailing service in China, making "no driver behind the wheel" a reality.

Beijing issued a notice on driverless driving demonstration on Thursday, with Baidu becoming the first approved company to officially launch its driverless ride-hailing service with its robotaxi service platform Apollo Go.

This means that unmanned self-driving services were allowed for the first time in a Chinese megacity.

Baidu put in the first batch of 10 unmanned vehicles this time, and plans to add another 30 ones subsequently. So far, Baidu has the largest driverless taxi fleet in China.

Baidu's Apollo Go has launched robotaxi service in Chinese megacities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

In the fourth quarter of 2021 alone, the number of orders for Apollo Go has reached 213,000, which is still growing at a high rate in 2022.
