Asian Tech Press (OCT 15) -- TSMC CEO Dr. CC Wei officially announced TSMC's plan to build a chip fab in Japan during the company's third-quarter earnings analyst call.

TSMC plans to start constructing the Japanese chip factory in 2022 and put it into operation in 2024. The factory construction will take nearly three years.

Unlike the factory TSMC is building in Arizona, the factory TSMC is building in Japan will not adopt the advanced 5nm process to foundry chips but focus on mature processes. Dr. CC Wei revealed that the chip factory in Japan will use 22nm and 28nm processes to foundry chips for customers.

He did not reveal more details of the Japanese plant, and the plan to build the plant still needs to be approved by TSMC's board of directors before it can be implemented.

It was previously reported that TSMC's planned chip factory in Japan is expected to jointly operate with Sony to produce chips for automobiles and other products.
