Asia Tech Wire (July 4) -- South Korean battery maker LG Energy Solution hopes to commercialize dry-coating technology by 2028, according to Bloomberg.

Kim Je-Young, LG Energy Solution's chief technology officer, reveals this goal in an interview with Bloomberg at the company's headquarters in Seoul.

Companies ranging from Tesla to Samsung SDI are working on dry-coating technology, which seeks to replace the energy-intensive wet process of making cathode and anode electrodes, a key component of EV batteries.

Finding cheaper, greener ways to produce batteries is becoming increasingly urgent as demand for electric cars cools.

Kim said LG plans to complete a demonstration line for the dry-coating process in the fourth quarter and begin full-scale production in 2028.

This is the first time LG has made public its timeline for commercializing the technology.

He estimated that the dry-coating technology could reduce battery manufacturing costs by 17% to 30%.
