Chinese smartphone and electric car maker Xiaomi is reportedly requiring its employees to work no less than 11.5 hours per day.

Recent postings on China's workplace social media platform Maimai said that Xiaomi requires its employees to work an average of no less than 11.5 hours per day, with those working less than 8 hours required to submit a statement, and those whose working hours are ranked at the bottom of the list to be interviewed, or even persuaded to quit.

The postings, which came amid China's efforts to crack down on the "rat race" competition, hit the No. 1 spot on China's social media platform Weibo on Thursday.

Several Xiaomi employees confirmed the situation, Chinese media outlet Jiupai News reported on Thursday.

An employee of Xiaomi's cell phone department said that the situation varies from group to group, and that the average daily working hour requirement is 10.5 hours for groups with low requirements, while some groups even require an average of 14 or 15 hours per day.

The employee said that their department requires an average daily working hours of 12.5 hours, "but the leadership issued a verbal request, will not leave a trace."

A Xiaomi employee in Shanghai said their department does require an average of 11.5 hours, which means going to work at 9:00 and leaving work at 8:30.

"I previously reached an average of 12 hours, but still was interviewed by the leadership because I ranked low," said another Xiaomi employee in Jiangsu.

In addition, leave will also affect the average daily working hours, a month as long as the leave one day, the average daily working hours will be less than 8 hours, which requires additional overtime to make up for it.

The above cell phone department employees revealed that Xiaomi has been checking working hours in this way for more than a year, nearly 2 years, and they do not know why all of a sudden started discussing online recently.

The impact of substandard working hours is direct. A Xiaomi employee was previously asked to write a note - a reflective explanation of why the average working hours are not enough - for working less than 10.5 hours.

A Xiaomi employee in Beijing said that if the working hours are ranked low, they will be interviewed and warned by the leadership, and if they don't change, it may affect the performance appraisal.

And a Xiaomi outsourcing employee mentioned that their department requires employees to stay for a full 11 hours, and it's not an average, it's not enough for 11 hours today, and they will be interviewed tomorrow.

"If often less than 11 hours, outsourcing employees may be fired at any time," the person said.

As of now, Xiaomi has not responded to the reports.
